Back to {Poe Gnome} School

The Poe Gnome School is back in session; and since this is my first year blogging, and because this is a major facet of my life, I thought I’d introduce us.

We’ve been homeschooling since … well, since the birth of our firstborn … but that doesn’t mean we’re experts. Just like in the scriptures, we constantly need to prepare, to adapt to change and to try new tactics.

I love the example of Moroni, a captain of a Nephite army who was always up against daunting challenges: “And now it came to pass that Moroni did not stop making preparations …” (Alma 50:1) It goes on to explain that Captain Moroni caused his team to dig trenches, build towers and erect high places of security. He also sought to cut-off his enemies and their provisions. Because of his faithful, creative and ambitious ways, his team “did increase daily because of the assurance of protection which his works did bring forth unto them” (Alma 50:12).

Educating my children feels like a daunting challenge – a challenge I love and feel ever so blessed to have. (I have a feeling other parents feel the same way – whether homeschooling formally or informally … because we’re ALL educating our children at home!) We’re trying new tactics this year (like adding a few charter school classes) and I find myself praying that we can increase our knowledge and faith daily because of the assurance and protection our home offers. I know the home is meant to be a safe haven; and as we seek to protect our homes, through our works, we will be blessed.

Now, I’m guessing you’re wondering about the gnomes. They’re our school mascot. Why gnomes? Well, we’ve created our own little idea about these sweet gnomes (and if you’re serious about mystic creatures, please don’t be offended or try to burst our bubble by correcting us). We see gnomes as small in stature but big in influence. We imagine them scampering around, completing tiny acts of service for people (without being seen). They’re cheerful, helpful and energetic. They love nature, and they’re naturally nice.

This year, our Poe Gnome School has four full-time gnomes: A fourth grader, second grader, kindergartener and mama/teacher. We’re energetic learners and eager for hands-on learning opportunities. I say we, because this school teaches me too – hands-on and hands-down, oh-so-much.

As it says in the scriptures,
“Wherefore, he that preacheth and he that receiveth understand one another, and both are edified and rejoice together” (D&C 50:22)

That’s the goal … teaching, receiving understanding, becoming edified and rejoicing together! So, let’s strap on our backpacks and go forth into another school year!
